Rajiv Gandhi Science & Technology Commission (RGSTC)

To advance the application of science and technology for solving societal challenges, the Government of Maharashtra established the Rajiv Gandhi Science & Technology Commission (RGSTC). Following Cabinet approval, the State Legislature passed the Commission Act in December 2004, and the Commission was formally constituted in April 2005. Maharashtra remains the only state in India to have created such a statutory Commission, underscoring its strong commitment to science and technology as drivers of progress.
The Commission functions as a facilitator and catalyst, proactively taking science and technology to the people. Its mission is to stimulate change, development, and advancement by applying research and innovation to real-world needs.

Key Objectives


Serve as an agent of change by promoting science and technology-based development.

Facilitate collaboration between universities, research and development institutions, industries, and government departments.

Promote the adaptation and propagation of technology through studies, field demonstrations, training, consultancy, and publications.

Provide seed capital and resources to promising projects.

Act as a bridge between laboratories and large-scale applications, ensuring effective transfer of technology.

Encourage innovations in government sectors such as education, health, and agriculture to build a knowledge-based society and support sustained economic growth.

Develop institutional facilities for application-oriented research and strengthen areas lacking adequate infrastructure.

Support limited basic research, while prioritizing applied research and large-scale utilization.
